Why Tioga is a Great Family Destination
Tioga is a GREAT family destination. There are trails for all ages, making it the perfect place to spend time outdoors together. Whether it’s your child’s first time on trails or your family is looking for a fun, active day, Tioga offers something for everyone!
Welcome to Tioga Recreation Area in Cohasset!
When you arrive, you’ll notice Tioga’s welcoming atmosphere right away. Families are unloading bikes, kids are excited to explore, and the natural surroundings make it easy to settle in. The layout of the trails allows you to start small and gradually work your way up, making it great for younger riders and beginners.
Wendigo is a 0.3 mile loop designed for kiddos to learn the ways of the trails. It’s a great starting point with optional features (such as rocks, rollers, and bridges) to keep things fun while helping build skills like balance and control. It’s also close to the parking lot, so families can loop it multiple times or head back quickly if little riders get tired out.
From there, Gurley Flynn is a wide, one mile multidirectional loop that gives riders plenty of space to move comfortably. There are optional side features along the way that allow riders to challenge themselves when they feel ready, adding a fun “choose your own adventure” option to the ride.
Next on the list is Tioga Party, another one mile loop that’s a great beginner friendly progression trail for families looking to take the next step. To get to the Tioga Party the easiest way for beginners is taking the haul road. The haul road is a double track route that was once used for mining and now serves as a reliable, all weather path for hiking, biking, or accessing nearby trails. The climb up can be a bit of a workout, so taking breaks or pacing yourself is encouraged but the ride is worth it. The trail becomes a little narrower compared to Gurley Flynn, but it remains manageable and fun for riders gaining confidence.
Trailer Bike Trails + Kid-Friendly Paths Await!
At the top of the haul road, you’ll also find The Pathfinder Playground. This is where things can get a little more adventurous for those who are ready. With a variety of features and options, riders can practice skills, try new challenges, and continue progressing in a controlled environment. It’s a great spot to pause, play, and build confidence before heading back down.
To return to the pavilion, Greenway Rough Rider offers a 0.5 mile beginner gravity trail with optional features for added challenge. While it’s designed to be approachable, it rides more like a downhill trail, so good brake control and confidence are highly recommended. Riders can choose to take on the features or enjoy a smooth, flowing descent. If preferred, you can always head back down to the main lot via the haul road at a more relaxed pace.
Both Gurley Flynn and Tioga Party can likely accommodate trailer bikes. The haul roads throughout the system also offer scenic views and a more relaxed riding option if you’re looking to take it easy or mix things up.
Make a Day of It
For navigation of the haul roads, be sure to have the Trailforks app downloaded ahead of time. Signage is still in the works for the haul roads, and having the map handy will help you explore with confidence and make the most of your visit.
Tioga is also a great place to slow down and enjoy a full day outdoors. The pavilion and pit area are perfect for a picnic, with onsite grills in the main lot, or you can take the Gurley Flynn connector down and set up by the water for a more scenic meal.
If you need to grab supplies, Super One Foods is just 5 miles away. You can also head into town and pick up takeout from one of the many local restaurants if you’d rather keep things simple.
A few things to keep in mind while planning your visit: there is no potable water onsite, so be sure to bring plenty to stay hydrated. Helmets are highly encouraged for all riders, and it’s always a good idea to do a quick bike check before hitting the trails. Since some trails are multidirectional, staying aware of other riders helps keep the experience safe and enjoyable for everyone.

After a full day of riding, jumping in the pit is a refreshing way to cool off and a favorite for both kids and adults.
Tioga isn’t just about mountain bike riding, it’s about building confidence, creating memories, and enjoying time together outdoors. Pack up the bikes, bring some snacks, and come to experience everything Tioga has to offer! You might just find your new favorite family adventure spot.
