Ride Like a Local: Mountain Biking at Tioga
If you’re planning a mountain biking trip to Minnesota’s Iron Range, Tioga Recreation Area should be high on your list.
Built on the site of a former iron mine, Tioga Recreation Area offers one of the most diverse mountain biking experiences in the Midwest. Whether you’re looking for beginner-friendly flow trails, jump lines, technical singletrack, family riding, or scenic views overlooking historic mine pits, Tioga delivers a trail network large enough to keep riders exploring for days.
Ride the Range Ambassador Delle Eliason describes it simply: “One of the best trail systems for a bit of every style of riding.”
Delle has been riding Tioga since 2019 and is known for her love of jumps, gravity riding, and flow trails. Here’s her guide to making the most of a visit.
First Things First: Start with Gears (K)nob
Ask Delle where a first-time visitor should begin, and her answer comes quickly: Gears (K)nob.
The trail offers a great introduction to what makes Tioga special. Riders get a taste of the flow, terrain variety, and approachable trail design that have helped make Tioga a favorite among riders across Minnesota and beyond.
One thing that surprises many first-time visitors is how easy the trail system is to navigate.
Despite covering a large area, Tioga’s network of interconnected loops allows riders to customize their experience. You can build a quick ride, spend an entire day exploring, or repeat your favorite sections to practice specific skills.

Delle’s Trail Recommendations
Best Trail for Beginners – Gurley Flynn
For riders new to mountain biking, Delle recommends starting with Gurley Flynn.
The trail offers an approachable introduction to Tioga’s riding style while helping new riders build confidence and develop fundamental trail skills.
Best Family-Friendly Ride – Gurley Flynn
The same qualities that make Gurley Flynn a great beginner trail also make it Delle’s top recommendation for families.
The trail is welcoming, fun, and accessible without sacrificing the experience that makes mountain biking enjoyable for riders of all ages.
Best Climb – Iron Lady
Most riders don’t come to Tioga thinking about climbing, but Delle points to Iron Lady as her favorite ascent in the system.
The trail rewards the effort with a fun ride and provides access to some of the area’s most enjoyable terrain.
Best Descent – Flying Carpe Diem
When the trail turns downhill, Delle points riders toward Flying Carpe Diem.
The combination of speed, elevation change, and playful features creates a descent that keeps riders coming back for another lap. It’s the kind of trail that leaves a smile on your face from top to bottom.
Best Flow Trail – Flying Carpe Diem
If flow is what you’re after, Delle says it’s hard to beat Flying Carpe Diem.
Fast, smooth, and packed with opportunities to carry speed, it’s the trail she comes back to time and time again. It’s also her favorite trail in the entire system, making it the one she recommends most often to riders looking for the quintessential Tioga experience.
Minneflowta is another of Delle’s favorites. Its playful rollers, sweeping turns, and approachable design make it an excellent complement to Flying Carpe Diem and another must-ride for flow trail enthusiasts.
Best Jump Line – Hockey Hair
For riders looking to spend some time in the air, Delle recommends Hockey Hair.
The trail has become one of her favorites over the years. One of her most memorable solo riding experiences was spending hours lapping Hockey Hair until she finally cleared the first jump.
For riders looking to progress their jumping skills, it’s a must-ride.
Best Technical Challenge – Bloodstone
If technical riding is more your style, add Bloodstone to your must-ride list.
This challenging singletrack trail is packed with Tioga’s signature red iron-rock features. The first half winds through tight singletrack with rock gardens around nearly every corner before opening into a faster, more flowing bench-cut trail featuring sections of rock armoring.
It’s a rewarding challenge that showcases the technical side of Tioga riding.
Most Underrated Trail Network – El Jefe
Every local has a trail they believe deserves more attention.
For Delle, that trail is El Jefe.
This technical black diamond trail offers a fun challenge for experienced riders while still providing ride-arounds for those looking to bypass more difficult features. While visitors often focus on Tioga’s better-known trails, El Jefe delivers an experience that’s well worth seeking out.
Best View – Iron Maidenhair
One thing visitors should absolutely not skip is the view from Iron Maidenhair.
The overlook offers a reminder that Tioga isn’t just a great trail system. It’s also a chance to experience the unique landscapes created by the region’s mining history.
As an added bonus, Iron Maidenhair serves as one of the primary access routes to two of Tioga’s most popular trails: Minneflowta and Hockey Hair. Many riders pass through the area on their way to some of the best flow and jump trails in the system.
For many visitors, it’s one of the most memorable stops of the entire ride.

A Perfect Day at Tioga
Delle’s perfect summer day at Tioga combines great riding with a few local favorites.
- Grab breakfast and coffee from Brewed Awakenings.
- Head to Tioga and set up a hammock before riding.
- Spend several hours exploring the trail network.
- Take a break for snacks and a quick hammock nap.
- Ride some more.
- Cool off with a swim in the mine pit.
- Finish the day with dinner at El Potro.
It’s the kind of relaxed, ride-all-day experience that keeps riders coming back to Tioga year after year.
Make It a Weekend
If you have two days to ride the Iron Range, Delle recommends pairing Tioga with Giants Ridge.
After a day of pedaling, practicing jumps, and exploring Tioga’s trail network, Giants Ridge offers a completely different experience with lift-served gravity riding.
As Delle puts it: “After practicing jumps and pedaling all day, I can let my legs rest and put my jumping practice to work on the gravity trails at Giants Ridge.”
Together, the two destinations create a weekend that combines flow trails, jump progression, cross-country riding, and gravity-fed downhill laps.
Before You Go
A few final tips from Delle:
- Bring plenty of water. There is no potable water available on-site.
- Don’t assume Tioga is only for advanced riders. The green trails are exceptionally beginner-friendly.
- Take advantage of the loop system to customize your ride length.
- Stop by Ardent Bicycles before or after your ride.
- Consider extending your stay with kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, roller skating, or jet skiing in the area.
- If you’re staying overnight, Delle recommends Two Rivers Campground or Mallard Point Resort.
Whether you’re looking for flow, jumps, technical challenges, family riding, or a full weekend mountain bike adventure, Tioga offers one of the most complete riding experiences in Minnesota.
And according to Delle, it’s a place where every rider can find their perfect trail.
